It can sometimes be frustrating to realize how much you are spending on the groceries you are buying. After all – and this is especially the case for those who are shopping for a family – it can feel like you are spending a lot of money and getting hardly anything at all. One of the best ways to save money while grocery shopping is to begin to understand how to shop for value foods.

For breakfast, there are two great value foods to keep in mind: eggs, and oatmeal; both of these are extremely good for you, and both are inexpensive. While breakfast foods such as cereal or Pop Tarts are nice treats, they are much more expensive, and they are not nearly as healthy. Consider making the switch to eggs and oatmeal as your breakfast staple, and you will be surprised how much you start saving.

Fruit is important for anyone’s diet, but fruit can be expensive, esepcially when it is out of season; if you want to save money buying fruit, you should consider buying bananas. No matter what time of year you are shopping for bananas, you can usually find them for a great price – often for as little as 50 cents per pound! Bananas are among the healthiest things you can eat, and they are great anytime you want a simple mid-afternoon or mid-morning snack.


One of the best value foods for dinner is spaghetti, which is inexpensive and healthy. Of course, you are unlikely to eat your spaghetti plain, but you can still have an inexpensive dinner when you add some pasta sauce and even some chicken!

Once you add these foods to your week’s regular eating schedule, you can start to seriously minimize the amount of money you are spending at the grocery store. Start to pay attention to these and other value foods, and your grocery budget will begin to go much further than it ever did before!
