The Truth About Low Fat Diets

Posted by: Charlotte's Doodad Blog on: 09/25/2011

Many of us are confused about the role of fat in our diets, wondering if it’s good or bad for us, which makes us question if low fat diets are effective or not. These low fat diet plans were based on eating as much as you wanted, as long as your diet was low in fat, under the assumption that people who subsisted on low fat foods (such as carrots and celery) would lose weight. This idea is based on studies linking consumption of certain types of fats with particular health issues.

It seems rational that eating low calorie foods would result in weight loss. The problem is that many high fat foods are good for you, since some types of fats are good, and many low fat foods are horrible for you, leading you to crave more. Take for example a Cosmapolitan, which contains no fat, but packs a lot of calories because it is high in sugar.

Low fat diets work if people are disciplined enough to eat low fat foods that are high in fiber and low in sugar. As long as you can eat low fat foods that won’t trigger an insulin rush (result of eating high sugar foods), you may find yourself limiting calories and losing weight. Unfortunately, most of us need the satisfaction of at least some high fat food in our diets, just to stave off cravings. The other problem with most low fat diets is they ignore the need for calorie control, and too many calories–no matter what kind of calories–results in fuel stored as fat.

The healthy solution? Try to eat low fat foods that are also low in simple carbs, but supplement your diet with healthy fats such as polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fat, the fats that contain Omega 3 and 6 acids. This means you can eat salmon, tuna, nuts, avocados, and olive oil, in moderation, of course.

Every healthy weight loss program emphasizes calorie control, wise menu choices, and exercise. If you choose to follow a low fat diet, make sure it is also a low sugar diet, emphasizing intake of healthy meats and high fiber foods.
